On Film & A Future We Can Stand
DISCLAIMER: My brain is a culprit of many devious and nefarious ways in which it allows or blocks what I want to write. In short, it works too fast and I type too slow so if some ideas get jumbled or confusing, blame my brain. I only mention this because I have a gigantic space in my head that can talk about films & movies, TV shows, theater, and acting and this space is chock-full of opinions, ideas, and an overall weirdness mixed in (that's my personality and you'll just have to deal with it).
I've currently come to the conclusion that I am bored to tears of superhero movies. In fact, I think this has been true for a few years now. Prior to 2008, superhero movies were few and far between and hit or miss. Despite this, there was still enough to sate our nerdy hungers for the most part. Fast forward to today and it's mostly MCU or DCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe or DC Comics Universe, but you already knew this unless you live off the grid or have a happy life). I think it's safe to say the MCU had a very successful decade in the 2010's and that the DCU was successful in that they sometimes made money? I don't know.
Currently, I care not for either franchise. I don't have a single need to see anything upcoming (although I'd be a liar if I wasn't excited to see Harrison Ford as Thaddeus Ross). I'd also say people are extremely fatigued in having to watch multiple TV shows and/or movies in order to get a full story.
ALL HAIL A SINGLE STORY INSIDE A SINGLE MOVIE PLEASE!
If I'm being completely honest, I want stand-alone originals. Give me wild and fantastic stories! I DONT WANT NEW FRANCHISES, I WANT NEW AND FRESH CINEMA.
Tell me a story about stairs that lead to nowhere in the middle of a forest. Tell me a story about aliens that start a war with us but have a twist where they actually came in peace and it was humans that started the war by accident. Tell me a story of forbidden love where old and outdated traditions are hurting current generations and preventing two people from having a happy and fulfilling life. Tell me a story about a heist, intricate and detailed, that goes wrong somehow but is able to still be a happy ending or, at the very least, a fantastic message to the world. Tell me a story for the sake of storytelling, for the sake of a message or theme. Tell me a story of whimsy, of that fantastical era of childhood innocence and beauty! Tell me a story about political intrigue with a tense and thrilling arc. Tell me a story, please, just tell me a story of substance and artistic integrity. And if you're anything like me, you'll have this energy within you, almost like a second soul, that is screaming for release. This energy, this spark, this soul-it is that exact passion to tell stories, the kind that aren't in existence yet, the ones hidden in one's brain. And I mean to extract that energy into stories.
I have the first act of a screenplay finished (like any work of fiction, it's never truly finished. You polish it up to be presentable perhaps a dozen times but it will never be complete. Most writers know how this goes) and I am part way into act II - and after I publish this blog post, I'll be cranking up the music, brewing more fresh coffee, and pumping out the rest of the script today, hopefully.
We need fresh stories without thinking of sequels, franchises, or the money involved. And that's exactly what I intend to do.
Love you all. Have the day you deserve.
